A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment for raping his 2-year-old cousin on February 2.
According to Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arrumugam, the father of the 2-year-old boy left him in the custody of his grandmother to go to town.
“His grandmother was then summoned to SASSA and asked her 25-year-old grandson to look after the child while she was away.”
Once the father had returned from town, the two-year-old told him his cousin had hurt him, and illustrated to his father what had been done to him.
The boy’s father immediately confronted the young man, who admitted to the crime and fled the scene.
“He was quickly apprehended by members of the public who tied him up until police arrived to take him into police custody.”
The accused was sentenced in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, March 7.
