PARADISE – A 28-year-old man was arrested for raping a 24-year-old woman near Finnermore Street in Paradise on Thursday, February 23.
Allegedly, the suspect was released from prison the day before, after he had been found guilty of theft in June last year.
According to sources, the victim was walking through the veld when she was accosted by the suspect.
SAPS Communication Liaison and Marketing officer, Lizzy Arumugam said: “The suspect was convicted for theft and sentenced to pay R12 000 or serve 12 months imprisonment, of which R4000 or four months imprisonment is suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of theft during the period of the suspension.”
The suspect appeared in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on February 27.
“The suspect is remanded in police custody until March 14 for a bail application,” concluded Mrs Arumugam.
