Police descended on Ladysmith Pick ‘n Pay yesterday afternoon after receiving a tip-off of an armed robbery in progress.

The call turned out to be a hoax, and police are investigating the source of the call.

Dozens of heavily-armed police approached the centre from all sides in less than a minute from the call.

This follows shortly on the heels of an armed robbery on Wednesday morning in which a large sum of money was stolen at another local supermarket.

Police are investigating and arrests are expected to be made soon in that case.

Police have issued a warning to the public that making hoax calls is a criminal offence and with modern technology, the device used to make the calls can easily be traced.
