Burglars take advantage of broken wall in in Drakensberg Avenue

According to the resident who opted to remain anonymous out of fear of being targeted again by burglars, the municipality had to enter her property to repair the damage.

BARRY HERTZOG PARK – A resident living in Drakensberg Avenue, Barry Hertzog Park, blames the municipality for a burglary and two attempted burglaries after municipal workers repaired a sewerage pipe in November 2016.

According to the resident who opted to remain anonymous out of fear of being targeted again by burglars, the municipality had to enter her property to repair the damage.

“They had to remove a portion of our perimeter wall to get in with their machinery, but never replaced it properly. Now, there are two gaps in the wall.”

Since then, the resident has been burgled once and two further attempted burglaries have been made.

“We have a tenant who lives in a Wendy House in the back yard. I got home from work on Friday, March 17, and saw the door was open. When I phoned him to ask if he had come early and worked in the Wendy house, he said no. It was then when I saw the lock had been broken.”

Tools had been stolen from the Wendy house.

The burglary took place on Friday, March 10. A man was then caught trying to break into the Wendy house again on Saturday, March 11, and the second attempted burglary took place on Monday, March 13.

“My family and I think this is all because it is easy to gain access to our property.”

The resident believes if the municipality were to repair the wall, she and her family would not have to fear further burglaries.

The municipality was contacted for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to print.
