NEWCASTLE CBD – Six solar street lights have been installed in Newcastle in Murchison Street and three in Boundary Road on March 11 and March 13.
Strategic Executive Director for Electrical/Mechanical Services, Lindile Zincume said the municipality recently decided to put the 60 watt street lights to the test, making it a first for the town.
“The need to conserve electricity is clearly a priority. Replacement costs of current street lights and the energy consumption are also fairly high. The main benefit of these lights is the fact that they do not use any electricity.”
The solar lighting is 100 per cent renewable, as the lights are charged naturally. The lights are not only cost effective, but also environmentally friendly.
Most of the town’s street lights use 125 watt mercury vapour lamps.
“A practical example is as follows; the annual cost for 100 street lamps amounts to R54750, while solar power costs nothing. Once we have tested the effectiveness of these lights we will consider gradually changing more.”
