PIONEER PARK – A vacant plot of land in Lukas Meyer Street, Pioneer Park, has become a thorn in the side of a disgruntled resident.
The resident, who opted to remain anonymous out of fear of being victimised, claimed the land has become a hiding ground for criminals.
“The crime is so bad that one night my husband and I witnessed men running into the veld and hiding a ladder they had stolen in the ditch.”
She claimed her home had been targeted by burglars twice.
“They stole a radio we keep in our lapa, as well as drinks in the fridge.”
The culprits allegedly also attempted to break into the home of a neighbour.
The resident claimed she requested the municipality erect a flood light on the plot.
“It is pitch black at night and you can’t always see if people are hiding there. If there were a light, we would feel safer,” she said.
Adding to the fear of being targeted by burglars for a third time, the resident claimed a portion of her wall was broken by the growth of a tree on the vacant erf.
“We reported the matter to the municipality in November 2016, as the tree is on its property. We were promised it would be repaired, but March is now coming to an end and nothing has been done.”
“I know if someone wanted to break into my home they could simply jump over the wall, but this makes it so much easier for them,” she added.
Director for Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries, Vish Govender, could not comment on the erection of a light, however, he assured the wall be attended to.
“The matter is currently with Council’s insurers. As soon as we receive feedback, the wall will be attended to,” he concluded.
