Following years of outcry for various issues in Lorne Street to be addressed, and after a further three months of media attention and constant calls to the local municipality, Malek’s Service Station have taken matters into their own hands and pockets.

The Malek’s who own the service station in Lorne Street have run out of ideas in order to get the attention of the relevant municipal workers to address the uncovered storm water drain and pavement, blocked gutters and a damaged road surface, to name a few.

The business paid for the necessary material and equipment as well as the labour of three men to complete the job, which in total amounted to R8 500. The deeply scarred road surface was restored by noon of March 17.
They gladly paid the price for the benefit of the community and the safety of customers and road users, which include pedestrians. Ahmed Malek highlighted that, on March 1, the high court ruled that private citizens can perform basic service delivery, provided that they give the department 30 days’ notice and obtain at least two independent quotes in order to be reimbursed.
“I would rate basic service delivery in this town with a minus zero,” said the business man with disgust. I have made calls to every relevant and non-relevant person that answered the phone within the municipality; numerous times and on numerous occasions, I reported the matter and still nothing is done. This is pathetic,” he added.
The repair has already been welcomed by locals to use the road daily.
