‘Homecoming’ exhibit to mark 135th anniversary of Dundee
It was in 1882 that the first lots of land were sold in the area for development.
Time never stands still at Talana Museum. A grand opening is planned for Heritage Weekend, September 23-24, for the Museum’s new permanent exhibit called ‘Historic Dundee’.
The exhibit curator, Pam McFadden, calls it a Dundee homecoming. It is to coincide with the 135th anniversary of Dundee. It was in 1882 that the first lots of land were sold in the area for development.
Pam says the display will include Glencoe and Sibongile.
“We are looking for all sorts of information – interesting stories, photographs, your memories of early days in Dundee, trophies from the Dundee Agricultural Shows, school prizes and school uniforms from 30-80 years ago.
One of the important photographs we are trying to find is one that will show us what the curfew bell (on Victoria Street which when rang, signalled the deadline for all blacks to leave town and go back to Sibongile during the Group Areas Act era) looked like.
“Was it the same bell as the one on the market square?”
