Update: ANC express shock at murder of Umzimkhulu Speaker

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday expressed shock and distress at the murder of ANC Harry Gwala regional deputy secretary Khaya Thobela by unknown gunmen.

47-year-old Khaya Thobela, the Umzimkhulu Municipality Speaker, was shot at his home on Thursday. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and passed away in hospital on Sunday morning.

Thobela was shot several times as he arrived at his home in Emfundweni, Ward 13 in Umzimkhulu.

An integrated team comprising the Ladysmith Tactical Response Team, K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence and Van Reenen SAPS swooped on a suspect who boarded a taxi to Gauteng.

The taxi was stopped at Van Reenen and the suspect was found in possession of a revolver.

The 37-year-old appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
