Robber sentenced to over a decade behind bars in Ladysmith

The robbers stole cash and fled the scene after assaulting the couple

A 22-year-old accused in a Ladysmith robbery case was recently sentenced in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court.

This follows an incident on December 5, 2015, in Area J, Steadville.

A couple were inside their home, where they also have a tuck shop, when five men broke into the property at about 8pm.

One of the robbers had a firearm and fired shots inside the house. No one was injured in the shooting, but the robbers proceeded to assault the couple.

The suspects stole cash and then fled the scene.

Three days later, one of the suspects was spotted in the area and arrested by police.

Nhlakanipho Alfred Ngwenya was convicted and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to rob and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. The sentences are to run concurrently.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Police are still working on identifying and tracing the other four suspects.
