In an exclusive interview with the Ladysmith Gazette, the elderly couple whose home was broken into yesterday (May 23) in Mason Road say they are devastated at being the victims of a house robbery. They say they have worked hard for their home and their belongings, only for thugs to break in and steal everything.
The couple say they arrived home at around 5.30pm, after work, and as they drove into their yard, they noticed that the alarm light was flickering, which indicates that something is not right. They got out of their vehicle and walked to the lounge door, and were horrified to see that the door was open.
Panicked, they walked into their home and immediately saw that the television was missing. Walking into the other rooms, it was apparent that clothes, jewellery and other electrical appliances had been stolen.

They immediately contacted Councillor Abbas Warasally and the police.
According to the couple and Cllr Warasally, the responding time from the police and alarm company was terrible, as it took them hours to get to the house.
What is also a huge problem is the open veld in the area. This veld belongs to the municipality and is never cleaned or the grass cut, which people believe attracts criminals to prowl in search of their next target.
“This is not the first house robbery in the area. Many other people have been robbed as well. This open veld needs to be sorted out as soon as possible,” say the concerned couple.
