Just In: Elderly woman’s body stolen from her grave

The family informed police they visited the grave site on Good Friday, April 14, and at the time all was still in order there.

DANNHAUSER – A case of grave violation is being investigated by the Dannhauser police, after a coffin and body was reported stolen on May 23.

According to police reports, Mr Thwala of oSizweni claimed he was informed by a family member that the body and coffin of his grandmother, who was buried 14 years ago in Nkosibomvu, Allen Farm Graveyard, had been stolen, leaving only the blanket she was buried with behind.

The family informed police they visited the grave site on Good Friday, April 14, and at the time all was still in order there.

Police are urging anyone with information pertaining to the theft, or the identity and whereabouts of the culprits, to contact Dannhauser police on 034 621 6500.

SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam said cases such as these are often not reported to the police.

However, when a corpse or a coffin has been stolen from a grave, it is advisable to contact your local police station as soon as possible in order for the correct investigations to be conducted.

“This is a serious offense, and anyone caught doing so will be punished accordingly. If found guilty of such an offense in court, you will serve a jail sentence,” she concluded.
