32-year-old Brian Lindani Sbaya Dladla will spend a decade behind bars after being convicted on rape charges and sentenced in the Ladysmith Regional Court on Friday, May 12.
The crime happened during December last year.
A 24-year-old woman was in the Ladysmith CBD, making her way to a filling station where she was supposed to meet a family member, when she was approached by a man she didn’t know. She reluctantly agreed to let the man walk with her.
In the vicinity of Lyell Street, the man pulled out a knife and began to threaten the woman. He forced her into a shack, where he raped her at knife-point.
When the man left the shack, she quickly escaped and ran as quickly as she could towards a minibus parked not far away.
She explained to the driver what had just occurred and he stopped a passing security company vehicle. The police were then informed. Quick response from police resulted in the arrest of the suspect.
He was recently sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape and was also found unfit to possess a firearm.
The case was investigated by Constable NR Mazibuko from the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
