The grade six and seven group at Sam-Lyn Edu Centre have spent the past few weeks learning about wild animals and other environmental issues, culminating in a waste management workshop on Saturday morning.
Geo Smit, a third year student in Nature Management at Centurion Academy in Centurion has done his practical project at Sam-Lyn Edu Centre. He is based at UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve near Colenso.
The children have played games, done research and used their English skills while learning about wild animals and their behaviour.
There was great excitement on Saturday morning as the children were taught about soil erosion, ran in relay teams (placing waste in the correct bins), using a sling made of waste material and having an opportunity to be creative with waste material.
The children loved interacting with Geo and gaining practical knowledge from someone who is also in the field. Eight children have been chosen to visit Umphafa Private Nature Reserve as a reward for all their hard work.
With the interest shown by the children, who knows if one of them might not one day study Nature Management and be given the opportunity to share this extremely important knowledge with others.
