SuperMom Denise: ‘I love all my children equally’

Never change yourself to please others...

“As a mother, one should always know that God gave you your children for a reason, and only you as a mother can fulfil that reason. Never give up on yourself as a mother and never give up on your children no matter what”. Those were the encouraging words from Denise van der Westhuizen, a woman of God and a phenomenal mother.
She was born in Dundee but has also lived in Glencoe and Pretoria and several other places. Denise was a police officer for 23 years before becoming a secretary at Ichthus Christian School. She raised two of her elder children on her own before she remarried. She became a mother of four when she remarried and she loves all her children – who are now adults – dearly. “I am a mother to my husband’s children. I don’t see myself as a step mum, but a mother who loves them equally,” enthused Denise. “During school holidays they all come and visit me alongside my nine grandchildren, I just love them.”

Denise wishes nothing but happiness and peace for her kids, “they must always be thankful for what they have and be satisfied with it” she emphasised.

Denise is a straight forward person who doesn’t beat around the bush, she doesn’t lie to protect her children. She believes in not giving them what they want, but she gives them what they need. She understands how children differ in personality and she caters to their different characters. “As a mother, I am always there for my children through thick and thin, and I always tell them that they are never alone, God is with them,” cited Denise.

“I was very surprised when I heard that my daughter, Tanya, entered me into the Courier Super-Mom competition. She said it’s the least she could do since she wasn’t here for Mothers Day.”
Denise’s message to her children is to always believe in yourselves and always know that when you chase a dream, you must put your all into it until you achieve it. Never change yourself to please others.
