The man was accused of shoplifting

There was drama at the Dundee Police Station late yesterday when a man, arrested for shoplifting, grabbed a police officer’s firearm and shot himself dead.
Captain Nqobile Gwala, SAPS spokesman confirmed the incident. The 27-year-old, who is believed to have been a car guard,  had been earlier arrested for stealing liquor from a bottle store near Jeff’s Service Station.
He was taken to the police station and while being questioned in the statement room managed to snatch a firearm from one of the officers. It is not clear how many shots he fired.
An inquest docket has been opened and the Independent Police Investigating Department, IPID, is investigating. The victim has not yet been named.
