Unveiling of Reconciliation Memorial at Wagon Hill/Platrand

Two triangles rise, representing the Devonshire Regiment and Harrismith Commando

The Reconciliation Memorial was unveiled today (June 11) at Wagon Hill/Platrand.

On January 6, 1900, the Devonshire Regiment and Harrismith Commando engaged in a fierce battle on the site of Wagon Hill.

Today, two triangles rise, representing the Devonshire Regiment and Harrismith Commando.

The squares cut out of each triangle represent the sacrifices made on both sides during the battle.

It is within the missing segments of the triangles and the space in between that the two units are united.

On January 6 every year, with the setting of the sun, they will be remembered.

Members of The Rifles, Platberg Shellhole, Harrismith and Siegetown Shellhole Ladysmith, and Ladysmith Historical Society were in attendance at the unveiling.
