Local supermarket stands against violence
Staff members took some time to have a peaceful protest at the store to show their concern with the current spread of violence against women.
DRESSED all in black and with their male staff members wearing skirts, the local Spar decided to show their support for the movement against the killing of women in the country.
With 85% of their workforce being female, managers from this local supermarket said they felt this initiative was one very close to their hearts.
“The idea was raised by Bonisile Bhengu and the other staff members were keen on joining, they then brought the idea forward to us the management team and we were pleasantly surprised but also very keen on helping where we could,” said Sfiso Makhanya, one of Spar’s owners.

“We want to send out a message to rapers and abusers out there that their actions will not be tolerated. Enough is enough! We cannot go about ignoring what is happening in our country on a daily basis. This could be easily be happening to someone anyone of us knows,” said Bonisile who is also the store assistant manager.
Elie Wiesel once said: “We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, not the oppressed,” and this seems to have been the idea behind Spar’s initiative.
These locals are hoping that their message will cause a ripple effect across town and many other Vryheiders will stand up against the brutality aimed at females.
