Research has recently shown that many young women have issues attending school once a month due to not having sanitary pads.
Affordable and hygienic sanitary products are out of financial scope for many young girls in low income areas which then makes them resort to the use of unhygienic rags and cloths.
A girl is on average absent from school due to menstruation for 4 days every 28-day cycle and loses 13 learning days, equivalent to 2 weeks of learning every school term (according to Humanity Healing).

Local businesswoman, Angel Shelembe, has decided to join the ‘Keep a girl child in school’ campaign, which collects sanitary pads and donates them to schools in need.
“We are doing this project in partnership with the local Spar on Utrecht Street. We are urging locals who can make donations to buy the pads and drop them off either here at 4Room Events or at Spar,” she said.
The pads collected will be donated to four local schools.
Locals who would like to make donations can drop off the pads at 4Room Events on 185 Utrecht Street or at the Spar on Utrecht Street.
