An educational outing to Riverside Farm for grade twos

The learners eagerly watched the calves each drinking their two litres of milk for breakfast

On June 20, the grade twos from St Gregory Primary School set off on their excursion to Riverside Farm on the R622 (the Greytown Road).
The sun was shining and it was set to be a wonderful day.

Once we arrived at the farm, we were greeted by Ashleigh Vernall and Bongani Rabiri who took us into the dairy. Inside the dairy, the cows were enjoying their breakfast and the heifers were being milked. Bongani explained to the excited learners about the milking process at Riverside Farm – starting with the cow and ending off in the tanker.

The learners got to see each stage, which was very informative. Next the learners were able to help milk the cows using the milking machine. Matebello and Zevele helped the children put the milking machines on.

After this, Bongani brought some fresh milk for the learners to drink. Most of them were brave enough to try the milk. It tasted delicious!

Our next stop on our dairy farm tour was to visit the calves. They were very cute! The learners eagerly watched the calves each drinking their two litres of milk for breakfast. The calves couldn’t get enough lapping up each drop!

To end off our brilliant morning, we had our picnic and playtime in the beautiful garden. We were treated to juice and goodie bags from Andrew and Linky van der Walt who run the farm. Thank you to all at Riverside Farm for hosting the grade twos and making our first dairy farm trip so memorable.
