The municipal strike entered its third day today (July 7) and Ladysmith residents are left wondering how long this protest action will continue.
The strike began on Wednesday (July 5) at the Department of Hygiene, Engineering & Services offices, where municipal workers blocked the entrance with burning tyres.
The protest has resulted from the following grievances: the workers feel they are underpaid; the out-sourcing of jobs; the issue of hiring people from outside the boundaries of Alfred Duma Local Municipality; and the hiring of inexperienced people as permanent workers.

Yesterday, the workers converged on the Department of Electricity, where they gathered to list their grievances to the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) to present to municipal officials.
Alfred Duma Local Municipality is in complete shutdown, as all municipal offices are closed due to the strike.
A meeting between SAMWU and municipal management is underway, as they try to resolve the matter.
This is a developing story and will be updated as soon as we have more information.
