No water in Vryheid as pump at Klipfontein packs up

The one working pump at Klipfontein Dam has packed up, leaving Vryheid taps dry until repairs can be conducted.

The one working pump at Klipfontein Dam packed up today resulting in poor water pressure in some areas, and no water supply at all in others.

While there are four pumps altogether at Klipfontein, the other three are still awaiting repair since they stopped working due to a lack of maintenance during the drought period.

Newly elected mayor of the AbaQulusi council, Jerry Sibiya, says the broken pump is being addressed as a matter of urgency, however, it is unlikely that repairs will begin until later today.

He explained that the municipality’s electricians were experiencing difficulty accessing and repairing the power box that leads to the pump, and experts are now being brought in from Durban to assist.

“We appeal to the community to please be patient as the repairs are being conducted. Hopefully, we will have a solution by this evening and we will be able to restore water. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,”said Cllr Sibiya.

Residents are advised to make alternate plans for water at home and at work for today and tomorrow in case the repair takes a little longer than anticipated.
