Newcastle High School learners performed exceptionally well at the annual Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists on August 4.
Of the 42 projects exhibited at the event, 15 learners were awarded with highly commended awards, six bronze awards were won, seven silver awards were taken and three gold awards were won.
Out of the three gold awards won, three of the learners were from Newcastle High School.
Grade 12 learners, Zuziwe Thwala and Yoliswa Dukashe, were awarded a gold medal for their project Blame it on the pacifier. Their project was also awarded the best female project of the day.
Grade 11 learner, Bongani Hadebe was awarded gold, along with an award for the best project in the environmental category, as well as the prize for the best creative and useful award in Agriculture.
The following learners were nominated and invited to a selection round on August 11, with the possibility to be invited to attend the annual National ESKOM EXPO for young scientists competition during the October holidays:
Grade 12 learners, Zuziwe Thwala and Yoliswa Dukashe, Grade 11 learner Bongani Hadebe, Grade 10 learners Telisha Naidoo, Noel Sithole, Walter Dlomo and Lubanzi Xaba.

Great appreciation goes to the staff of NHS who were involved from February this year, to guide the learners with their projects, also attending workshops, and judging etc:
