37-year-old Basil Mazibuko competed in the Sub Veteran Category and said he was completely overwhelmed by the win.

Congratulations to Basil Mazibuko, who came in first in this year’s Memel Blood Buddy 51.1km Walk, with a superb winning time of 03:36:22.

The Newcastle Advertiser spoke with Mazibuko to find out what made this athlete so successful in this years race.

37-year-old Basil Mazibuko competed in the Sub Veteran Category. He said he was completely overwhelmed by the win, as it was only his second time competing in this race.

“I competed once in 2013, so I never thought I would win today. I feel so happy and blessed,” said Mazibuko.

The athlete said his passion for running was one sparked many years ago, for long as he could remember he has always enjoyed the fast side of sport.

“I think I could run before I could even walk or talk.”

Mazibuko expressed his anticipation for the Two Oceans Comrades Marathon which he would be competing in next year, and said he would be dedicating as much time as possible to training for the event.

He advised all aspiring runners to just keep training hard, and enjoy every moment on the road.
