Cansa Relay organising team touches base

Cancer survivors got to decorate Luminaria bags and place painted hand prints onto a banner, which will be displayed at the Relay

A fun information session to touch base with cancer survivors and team captains ahead of the upcoming Cansa Relay for Life was held last Wednesday.

The session was hosted by the Estcourt Cansa Relay for Life Organising Committee and was held at the Forderville Primary School Hall. The attendees caught up over tea and snacks after which they got seated for the first item on the programme.

Mina Prithipal got ready to put her yellow hand print onto a banner for the Cansa Relay for Life.

Relay for Life Event Chairperson Anil Sookraj warmly welcomed everyone and since it was Women’s Day, dedicated a song and poem to the women to remind them of their worth. He went on to urge the survivors to fight on and not to give up hope on their journey.

Irmhild Witthoft and Sarah Hughes had fun decorating their Luminaria bags.

Guests were asked to make suggestions toward giving the 2017 Cansa Relay for Life a twist. With that said, this year a blood donor clinic will be hosted at the Relay. A speaker from the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) gave her testament on how blood helped save her life during her fight against skin cancer.

“As long as your blood is good, donate it. If I knew who donated that one pint I needed to save my life I would thank them on bended knees,” said Linda Mazibuko.

Then a very lively song echoed through the hall as some team members and survivors danced to with posters clutched in their hands. Mr Sookraj announced that the Purple Passion Parade will be held on August 27 from 10am, starting at the Spar Shopping Centre. Thereafter the organising committee helped hand out Cansa Relay T-shirts and wrist bands.
