At the beginning of the year we learned about natural resources and the importance of conserving and protecting them. Particular attention was paid to water and wetlands and the on-going drought has made this even more pertinent.
Unfortunately illegal dumping occurs in the area and the plan was to issue a memorandum to the Mpofana Municipality to make them aware of the problem and to urge them to do something about it. This has been done every year since 2014.
The children are taught about “constructive civic engagement” instead of “destructive civic engagement”. Each grade seven child wrote a persuasive letter to try and convince the local authorities to take action.
Over 40 bags of litter were collected. Councillor Ismail will receive our memorandum together with the persuasive texts that the children have written. Treverton has been acknowledged internationally by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa) through their Eco-Schools Programme.
The school has won awards and has continued to retain their commendation as a school that strives to engage in environmental education at all levels.
