Natal Spa Road closed, protest underway

Tyres were set alight and the road was blocked by placing logs across before organisers of the march arrived and attempted to restore order.

Lt Col Alan Westermeyer has confirmed that the Natal Spa Road to Paulpietersburg is still closed due to a service delivery protest in ward 7.

Even though permission to host a march this morning was granted beforehand, it is believed that members of the aggrieved community decided to take to the streets hours earlier at 2.30am, while the actual organisers of the march were still asleep.

Tyres were set alight and the road was blocked by placing logs across before organisers of the march arrived and attempted to restore order.

The road remains closed as protestors await the arrival of mayor, Jerry Sibiya, who will receive the protestors’ memorandum of demands. Among the demands are supply of electricity, water, RDP houses and toilets, which they say were promised to them years ago.

It will be reopened to the public thereafter.
