Update: 5 dead and 6 injured in horror crash near Ladysmith
The exact cause of the crash is unknown and the Pietermaritzburg Collision Unit is investigating the case.
6 people were injured and 5 tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision between a Toyota Avanza and a Land Rover on the Bergville road last night (September 4).
“A female is currently in ICU, fighting for her life, and another passenger is in hospital in a stable condition. The remaining four passengers were seen to in hospital and later discharged,” said Ladysmith Provincial Hospital PRO Thabo Sithole.
In the Land Rover was Chief Hlongwane from the Bergville area. He was returning from an ANC meeting in Ladysmith when the horrific collision occurred.

The occupants of the Avanza were returning home after work.
Paramedics and other emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after 6.30pm, finding two wrecked vehicles on opposite sides of the road.
