On February 24, 2017 it was reported that Newcastle Municipality was in the process of procuring a new wireless IP CCTV city surveillance system.
This was prompted by the lightning strike during January 2017, which resulted in substantial damage to the CCTV servers as well as the infrastructure.
A response by the Newcastle Community Safety Department stated that an insurance claim that was submitted to the insurance company.
This had been approved, and repairs could be carried out to the damaged system soon.
