Amajuba High Project: ‘Build a Classroom’ needs your help
After much consideration, headmaster Justus Hartung, together with deputy headmistress Charlene Lombard, set out on a mission to launch 'Project Build a Classroom' to help accommodate an additional 120 new phase one learners as of 2018.
Amajuba High School is known for its kindness when it comes to the well-being of its learners, teachers and even parents.
The school has been running its feeding scheme kitchen for well over two decades, and always goes the extra mile to accommodate children from poor backgrounds.
In order to successfully run these initiatives, the school organises various fundraising projects throughout the year.
Now, the school is in need of the help of the community to complete its newest initiative: ‘Project Build a Classroom’.
The school’s enrollment is steadily increasing since changing to a bilingual school in 2004, making it difficult to accept more children each year.
This means the school is forced to turn down a large number of learner who wish to begin their schooling careers at Amajuba High School.
The school is situated in a a lower income suburb, and by turning away learners, it then entails additional costs to parents who would then have to spend more money on transport to ensure children get to school every day.
After much consideration, headmaster Justus Hartung, together with deputy headmistress Charlene Lombard, set out on a mission to launch ‘Project Build a Classroom’ to help accommodate an additional 120 new phase one learners as of 2018.
The two paired with the school’s committee, and began securing beneficiaries willing to contribute.
The school was soon overwhelmed by the amount of building material they received to start the project.
Hartung said they decided to make use of the parking lot under the library in Block C, and converted the space into four additional classrooms.
“It made sense to build the classes there, as there was already a ceiling as well as a floor. This eliminated the costs of having to build a completely new foundation. We will hopefully have completed the installation of the new windows by the end of September if all goes according to plan,” said Hartung.
However, even with all the building material received, the project still cannot be completed as more materials, as well as financial assistance is urgently needed.
Paint and cupboards are still needed to complete the classrooms, and financial assistance is required to pay for labour.
“We are in need of financial assistance to help pay for people to lay the tiles, as well as electrical wiring and painting.”
Aside from the new classrooms, Lombard also also indicated the need fora new play area, consisting of cheerfully painted tyres, different shapes for hopscotch, and more.
“We want to paint and add educational games to the playground, as well as bright colourful paintings around the paving. This will help stimulate and educate the children while they have fun during break times,” she said.
This too requires financial assistance in order to complete the play grounds.
Colours needed for the classrooms as well as the play area will consist of turquoise blue, royal blue, yellow, red, pink and green.
“The project means a great deal to me because there is a need to focus on the early childhood development of phase one pupils. The new playground would help with hand and eye coordination as well as mental and muscle stimulation.”
Hartung thanked every resident and business who had contributed towards the project.
“Thank you for listening to our proposals and for tolerating us during your busy schedules. Without you, this would not have been possible. I believe this is indeed a community driven initiative, set to help the children in our community.”
