Ex-learners of Drakensberg Secondary School (DSS) class of 1987 from afar as Switzerland, Singapore and Saudi Arabia joined the many locals to celebrate their 30-year matric reunion on July 8 at the Orion Mont-Aux Sources located in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains.
As a prelude to the main event, some friends gathered on the Friday to reflect and reminisce about the old times. Amidst great laughter and fanfare, friends danced and partied into the night. This was a weekend to celebrate old friendships and familiar bonds, chuckles and banter of yesteryear quickly resurfaced.
After being treated to a delicious lunch on Saturday, guests donned their best attire and at promptly 6pm, the main show began. It was a truly ostentatious and breath taking event, nuanced by glittering décor, delicious food and sweet music. The class of ’87 has done DSS proud with graduates of this class achieving several successes.
Various professionals including doctors, nurses, engineers, lawyers, accountants, teachers, fitters and turners and related tradesmen have emanated from this elite group of firebrands. Many have entered the business domain as well and have laid a marker for others to emulate.
There have been some accolades achieved in the sport arena as well, mostly in the Comrades Marathon and a few playing their hand on the golf course.

The class acknowledges the input, help and dedication of the community and educators in their development over the years. As a fitting gesture to pay homage to their former educators and as a way to give something back to the community, the class of ’87 generously donated an amount of R15 000 towards their alma mater.
The organising committee also wishes to express their gratitude to all involved who contributed to this event being such an overwhelming success.
