Great teamwork between members of the Newcastle K9 Unit, Ladysmith K9 Unit, Ladysmith Community Service Centre and Ladysmith Crime Prevention yielded the arrest of five suspects following the hijacking of a car.
According to police reports, on September 25, the Newcastle K9 Unit members were tracking a stolen Chevrolet Aveo, which was hijacked in the Ngoma area earlier that evening.
“They requested the assistance of the Ladysmith K9 Unit as it was believed the vehicle was in the Ladysmith vicinity. Together an intensive search was began, and the vehicle was recovered at a residence in Steadville, Ladysmith.”
The vehicle was searched and police found two unlicensed firearms, seven rounds of ammunition, and a knife in the vehicle, and the men were arrested.
The suspects aged between 20 and 28 years, appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrates Court on September 27, facing charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of firearms and possession of live ammunition.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa applauded the members for the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the firearms and vehicle.
“We will continue with such operations to ensure that all unlicensed firearms, that are in the hands of the criminals, are removed from the public domain,” he concluded.
