A 28-year-old suspected rapist from Madadeni Section 1 was apprehended and arrested on October 9, after he had failed to appear in court on September 1, 2017.
Captain Jabulani Ncube of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Department, said a joint operation between Newcastle FCS Unit members, Newcastle Municipality Traffic Officers, SAPS Crime Prevention, K9 Unit and local Security officers was conducted after they received a tip-off the suspect planned to flee to Johannesburg.
“The suspect was supposed to appear in court for the kidnapping and rape of a 13-year-old child, but did not show up for his trial. The suspect then allegedly further threatened to kill all witnesses, and a case of intimidation was added to the rape charges.”
It is alleged the suspect then fled to Ladysmith in August this year to escape being re-arrested.
“While in Ladysmith the suspect robbed an elderly woman of R2 000 and also stole cellphones,” said Ncube.
Police later received a tip-off informing them the suspect had returned to Newcastle with the intention of fleeing to Johannesburg.
However, the suspect’s attempt to escape the arms of justice was quickly brought to an end.
“The suspect allegedly spotted the police while at the taxi rank and ran away. Traffic officers spotted the suspect running from Terminus Street and gave chase. He was finally caught on a church premises in Arbor Park.”
The suspect will re-appear in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court soon.
FCS Investigating Officer Constable Mthimkhulu thanked everyone involved in the successful arrest of the suspect.
