The aim of the event was to discuss how joint efforts between police, CPFs and business owners using strategic methods, could combat crime within the business sector.
Various businesses from the Amajuba District had recently attended a Business Against Crime Breakfast, hosted by the MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liason, Mxolisi Kaunda.
The aim of the event was to discuss how joint efforts between police, CPFs and business owners using strategic methods, could combat crime within the business sector.
Kaunda said KwaZulu-Natal received a lot of media attention over the past weeks, but for all the wrong reasons.
“We have been in the spotlight due to a series of mass murders. We are losing potential investors as a result of this and therefore it is affecting job creation and everything else. We now need to rise as a community and unite together against crime. We can’t eliminate crime if we do not stand together.”
Kaunda emphasised the importance of creating crime fighting structures and resources involving all stakeholders, and said ‘lazy’ police officers needed to be reprimanded as they tarnished the image of the SAPS.
“Our police need to be fit and fast at all times, in order to suffocate crime within our communities.”
He also stated police needed to be more ready when tackling criminals.
He advised business owners to prepare for the festive season by upgrading their security systems, employing more security guards and being more vigilant of their surroundings.
“Members of the community should also be more involved with the police by coming forward with information regarding crime, as well as criminals. We also advise members of the community to be more pro-active in safety campaigns, especially among the youth of our country.”
Major General Mngonyama of the SAPS delivered a speech regarding crime in Newcastle.
She said business robberies were the most common crime at the moment in the Newcastle CBD, Riverside Industrial, Madadeni and Blaauwbosch areas.
Guests in attendance were treated to a scrumptious breakfast wile enjoying good company.
