8-year-old girl injured as prefabricated homes burn in Ladysmith

Cries of despair rang out through the night sky as residents' homes were destroyed

An eight-year-old girl was injured after a fire broke out at the prefabricated homes in Marula Drive.

It is believed that the fire started when a candle fell in one of the homes.

The young girl was sleeping when the house caught alight.

The parents of the child were not at home at the time, and the fire quickly spread.

Paramedics responded to the scene and treated the girl for smoke inhalation. She was taken to hospital for further treatment.

The fire rapidly spread throughout the other homes as well.

Residents quickly broke the walls of the prefabricated homes and took out their belongings.

The fire department and Public Safety officers also responded to the scene.

The blaze was put out by the officers while scores of people looked on.
