Police escort tourists out of protest hit Rorke’s Drift area

Tourists taken to safety

Police have escorted out tourists who were stuck in lodges in the Rorke’s Drift area since protest action started in the area on Wednesday morning.

A group of tourists were unable to leave the lodges and groups arriving in preparation for the Anglo Zulu War commemoration this weekend, starting on Friday, could not travel to their destinations.

Logs and rocks have been dragged across the road leading to Rorke’s Drift after protesters vented their anger of what they say is a broken promise to install electricity to residents.

Rorke’s Drift falls under the Msinga Municipality.  Earlier today a crowd of several hundred gathered and there were rumours that shops near the Museum at Rorke’s Drift would be burned down.  That did not happen,

Road signs have been damaged and the Biggarsberg Athletic Club has already cancelled Saturday’s marathon and peace walk, held inconjunction with the Rotary Club, as the safety of participants cannot be guaranteed.
