Two men sentenced for Bergville farm robbery

The two accused broke into the property in the evening while the home owners, aged 68 and 74, were asleep. They overpowered them and tied them up.

The Ladysmith Regional Court, on December 15, sentenced two accused to a lengthy term of imprisonment.

This is after an incident, which occurred on December 19, 2015 where they committed crimes on a farm in the Bergville area. The two accused broke into the property in the evening while the home owners, aged 68 and 74, were asleep. They overpowered them and tied them up.

“One of the suspects attempted to commit a rape but was unsuccessful. The suspects stole items from the house and then fled in the homeowner’s vehicle,” said police spokesperson Captain Charmaine Struwig.

The suspects were arrested shortly after the incident and on December 14, 2017 the accused were convicted. The pair was sentenced the following day.

The first accused, Philani Gerry Boy Mzolo, aged 30, was sentenced to three years imprisonment for housebreak-in with the intent to commit robbery; 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and five years’ imprisonment for attempted rape.
The second accused, Msizi Maseveni Hlatshwayo aged 27, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for housebreak-in with intent to commit robbery and 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
