Justice has finally prevailed for Mrs Kalai Chetty, an educator and Head of Department (HOD) at Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec), after she was knocked down and killed on Monday, July 21, 2014.
Suspect Mr Yudesvan “Joey” Govender appeared in the Estcourt Regional Court on Friday (February 2) and was found guilty on all counts he was facing. He will appear in court for sentencing on February 23.
“We are relieved that justice has finally been served. We have lived in agony for close to four years and now we can find some sort of closure to the tragic incident,” said husband Mr Logan Chetty on hearing the court verdict.
Mrs Chetty, who was walking with a long-time friend and fellow educator, allegedly turned a second before being hit by the car. Her friend managed to step out of the way split-seconds before it struck.
The friend was treated for shock by paramedics at the scene. She managed to identify the vehicle and its owner.

The driver of the vehicle linked to the hit ‘n run accident that killed the prominent Lasec HOD was arrested at his home shortly after her death. According to initial reports, the driver claimed he was unaware that he had hit anyone.
Mrs Chetty’s death sent shock waves through the Ladysmith community at the time.
Family, friends, colleagues and learners can now come to terms with her death after the court verdict.
