Mr Yudesvan “Joey” Govender appeared in the Estcourt Regional Court today (February 23) for sentencing regarding the death of Mrs Kalai Chetty, an educator and Head of Department (HOD) at Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec). The case was remanded until March 20 in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court.
Mr Govender last appeared in the Estcourt Regional Court on Friday, February 2, where he was found guilty on all counts he was facing.
Mrs Chetty was killed in a hit ‘n run on July 21, 2014. She was walking with a long-time friend and fellow educator when a car knocked her down and then drove off.

The friend allegedly turned and managed to step out of the way split-seconds before the car struck Mrs Chetty. She was treated for shock by paramedics at the scene.
The friend managed to identify the vehicle and its owner.
The driver of the vehicle linked to the hit ‘n run that killed the prominent Lasec HOD was arrested at his home shortly after her death. According to initial reports, the driver claimed he was unaware that he had hit anyone.
Mrs Chetty’s death sent shock waves through the Ladysmith community at the time.
Many in the community are now anxiously waiting to hear what sentence will be handed down to Mr Govender.
