SCHOOLS NEWS: St Dominic’s celebrates Shrove Tuesday

As part of Shrove Tuesday celebrations, Calverey also blessed the school and its children with prayer, where after the school bell was rung as per usual.

On February 13, learners and teachers of St Dominic’s Academy celebrated Shrove Tuesday.

Early morning the children enjoyed pancakes with friends, to prepare for the upcoming Lent.

Shrove Tuesday, colloquially referred to as ‘pancake Tuesday,’ is traditionally celebrated by Christians a day before Ash Wednesday, and the start of six weeks of fasting. In some countries the day is known as Mardi Gras and celebrated as the last day as gorging before the fastening period.

According to Reverend Fiona Calverey of Newcastle Methodist church ‘pancake Tuesday,’ is a good way for the children to prepare themselves for 40 days of fasting.

“One can see Shrove Tuesday as an opportunity to fatten up before the start of Lent the next day,” explained Calverey.

As part of Shrove Tuesday celebrations, Calverey also blessed the school and its children with prayer, where after the school bell was rung as per usual.

As the bell rang the whole school came to a standstill, which made it clear that the children of St Dominic’s are disciplined and passionately faithful children.

“It is important for us at St Dominic’s to celebrate important events on the Christian calendar. The Children enjoy it and it gives each individual child the chance to take time for their religion and do some introspection. ” commented Headmaster, Bryn Thomas

Shrove Tuesday at St Dominic’s Academy was a truly inspirational event.
