Sarel wins bridge building competition

The grade 10 bridge weighed 308 grams and was able to carry a weight of 45kg before breaking.

On February 22, three teams from Sarel Cilliers High school took part in the SAICE annual bridge building competition.
The teams excelled with the grade 10 team winning the competition, the grade 11 team ending 7th, and the grade 12 team ending 5th. The grade 10 bridge weighed 308 grams and was able to carry a weight of 45kg before breaking. They also won the prize for the most aesthetic bridge. The grade 10 team will be taking part in the national competition in August.
Boys Hockey Tournament
Sarel’s first team boys hockey took part in the St. Dominic’s hockey tournament on Friday and Saturday. The boys played very well and managed to end 4th in the competition.
Action Cricket
On February 20 the Sarel Cilliers development team met Dundee Brake n Clutch. Learners showed good improvement with S Mangaldeen and V Ranjith scoring 34 runs. The best bowler was Z Chenia.
Rugby
Sarel’s rugby boys travelled down to Pietermaritzburg on Friday to take part in the annual Voortrekker Night Series. The day kicked off with the u/16’s playing Glenwood in a tough match. The boys showed character until the end and unfortunately lost against a strong Glenwood team. The 2nd team played Linpark’s 1st team and won the close encounter 12/10.
The first team also gave a good performance against Westville’s second team, winning 14/0. This was the beginning of a tough week for the first team, as they are playing Kearsney on Wednesday and DHS (Durban) on Saturday. These three top Durban schools will test them to the fullest.
Karate and Kumite
Samiksha Ramballie, a grade 9 learner at Sarel Cilliers high school, participated in the KZN karate championship in Newcastle on February 24. She won gold medals in the disciplines of kata and kumite. She will now participate in the South African championships in Johannesburg from May 24-27. The school wishes her all the best.
Athletics
Six athletes were selected for the Umzinyathi team to go to the KZN trials on March 9-10. They are Christo Maré, Dewan Bezuidenhout, Bandile Mdluli, Sandile Zitha, Lindelwa Mdlalose and Raymond Smith.
