The man, believed to be about 30-years-old, is recuperating in a Pietermaritzburg hospital after his ordeal yesterday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring explained that when paramedics arrived on scene during the early hours of Sunday morning, they found the man trapped chest-deep inside the grain silo.

“Several men had climbed inside the silo and had begun to remove the large amount of grain. Provincial services utilised various rescue and cutting equipment to cut a large hole in the bottom of the silo, allowing more access for grain to be removed,” explained Mr Meiring.

After several hours, the man was freed from the silo. He was treated for injuries on scene before he was airlifted by a private medical helicopter and taken to hospital.

“The exact details surrounding this incident are not yet known,” added Mr Meiring.
