It has been almost two weeks since a fire ripped through four classrooms at Estcourt Secondary School (ESS).

The classrooms are completely destroyed. The four grade 12 classes that make use of the rooms have had to be housed in other parts of the school. Acting Principal, Ms MM Jordan said there is an urgent need to rebuild the block of classrooms.

“Most of our 800 learners come from areas like Mduzi, Wembezi, Ntabamhlophe and Mshayazafe. They receive government grants and become exempted from paying school fees making it difficult for us to cover the costs of rebuilding,” explained Ms Jordan.
The school remains hopeful that various departments and stakeholders who paid the school a visit recently can help them get back onto their feet.

Ms Jordan expressed her heartfelt gratitude for all the support from learners, educators and neighbouring schools, but also expressed her disappointment at the fact that the school is on the door step of the municipality, yet a visit from the Mayor or Municipal Manager was not made to date.
Classes have resumed as usual ahead of the exams, as one class is housed in the school library, one in a prefab class and two at the school’s hostel.
We challenge all locals and businesses to pledge in cash or building material donations towards the school. If you would like to help get the learners back into their classrooms, reach the school on 036 352 5001 during school hours or visit them at 100 Alexandra Street.
