UThukela District Municipality hosts fruitful councillors workshop

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu accompanied by uThukela District Mayor Cllr AS Mazibuko, local mayors and councillors including various government departments and other stakeholders held an Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) workshop from March 15 to the 16.

The aim of the workshop was to renew and revive the focus of councillors and government workers in discharging their duties. The Premier urged all councillors and civil servants to work hard and more efficiently to improve service delivery.

“You should not be side-tracked by corrupt activities but you must stand firm and unite to ensure that you serve your communities with integrity and diligently,” said Mr Mchunu.

He said that councillors should always know what is happening within their wards and must be committed to do their job well.

Mr Mchunu then shared with the audience the importance of the State of the Nation Address and its significance to the people. He also reminded those present that this year has been declared the year of former President Nelson Mandela as it coincides with his centenary.

District Mayor Cllr Mazibuko appreciated the visit from the Premier’s office and emphasised the fact that councillors must know the issues of their wards and work together with relevant stakeholders to make sure that service delivery is not compromised.

The Mayor committed himself to give support where it is due.

“It is important that councillors understand the issues on the ground. We are always ready to give support where it is needed,” the Mayor said.

Each local municipality was afforded an opportunity to do group discussions about issues that are affecting them in their respective communities and how they are going to intervene in making peoples life’s better.
The event lasted over a period of two days with councillors and government departments engaging each other meaningfully.
