Providing medical care for the underprivileged in Ladysmith

Despite the vast distance, 50 patients were seen

Bhekabathembu Secondary School was the venue of the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) Ladysmith branch outreach programme on Sunday. The school is perched on a hilltop in the Umhlumayo district, 60km outside Ladysmith. This is a truly rural area, with the nearest state clinic 20km away.

The outreach programme was held in conjunction with the Al-Imdaad Foundation (Ahmad Karrim and his team), Operation Sukuma Sakhe (Simon Gumede and local councillor Soojat Khan), together with the Department of Health and the Islamic Educational Centre (Principal KT Ziyambi and his learners).

Despite the vast distance, 50 patients were seen. BP and glucose screening, general medical assessment and dental care was provided. One patient walked 20km to have her painful tooth extracted!

Water, as well as apples and biscuits were distributed, while the Al-Imdaad Foundation provided health packs and walking aids to those in need.

A special thanks to the local ward liaison officer for facilitating the programme and to all who provided their services for those in desperate need. May you be rewarded abundantly.
