Update: Minister of Transport condemns criminal actions during violent protest on the N3

Minister Nzimande said that any person who blocks national roads conducts a criminal act and will be charged and prosecuted

The Minister of Transport, Dr Blade Nzimande, says he strongly condemns criminal acts in the form of violence, destruction of state and private property, looting of trucks and the blockading of national roads under the pretext of “service delivery protests”.
These acts of sabotage, disdain and criminality happened along the N3 freeway near the Mooi River Toll Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday (April 29).
“I want to reiterate the ‘government call’ that any legitimate concern our people might have should be raised in a non-violent manner and in line with the laws of our country governing such acts,” said Minister Nzimande.
The minister said that government always listens to the people’s legitimate concerns and always responds in a manner that continues to better their lives.
“I remain grateful to the law enforcement agencies for their swift reaction in restoring peace and stability in the area and for arresting a total of 54 people, who will soon face charges of public violence,” added Minister Nzimande.
Minister Nzimande further said that any person who blocks national roads conducts a criminal act and will be charged and prosecuted.
The minister confirms that the cleaning up and recovery operations have been completed, with both the northbound and southbound lanes open for traffic. “Law enforcement officers will continue to monitor the situation and are on high alert,” concluded Minister Nzimande.
