Getting to know St Dom’s Bryn Thomas

For the past 12 months, Bryn has offered his services as the Head Executive of St Dominic's Newcastle, where he says he has gone above and beyond to make a difference at the school.

When it comes to mastering the art of teaching, Bryn Thomas definitely has it covered.

With many years of experience behind him, Bryn prides himself in the fact that he has dedicated himself to changing the lives of the youth today.

Born in Durban, and raised in East London, Bryn has traveled the world, mastering his teaching skills, which he shares with those lucky enough to work with him.

“I am originally from the Cape, but I have lived and taught in the United Kingdom (UK), Ireland, East London, Johannesburg, Durban and now, Newcastle.”

For the past 12 months, Bryn has offered his services as the Head Executive of St Dominic’s Newcastle, where he says he has gone above and beyond to make a difference at the school.

“It has only been a short while, but I have made a lot of changes. We have hosted the Curro Regional Sport’s Festival. We have opened new classes and increased the number of pupils to 640. We have also increased our staff numbers to 82 members, and our all purpose sport’s centre will be opened soon.”

When asked what about teaching he enjoyed the most, Bryn said the opportunity to impact and shape the lives of future South African leaders is what made his job worthwhile.

When he is not running a school, Bryn can be found at home with his wife, Samantha, who heads her own Nursery School in East London and his eight-year-old son, Caleb.

When asked if he felt as though he had the power to inspire his learners, he responded and said he was often humbled when his learners would approach him and thank him for making a difference in their lives.

Bryn’s advice to teachers who often felt unappreciated in the teaching industry was to value themselves.

“If people value themselves, and what and how they make a difference, then they will feel appreciated in any industry,” he said.

When asked what advice he had for this year’ Grade 12’s who were getting ready to take on the ‘big world, he said; ” Don’t leave out there. Give everything you can and be the best you can be in all that you do.
