Punters gear up for Vodacom Durban July handicap

The main race will be shown on television at 4.20pm

Well, if you’re not aware what is set to take place this Saturday (July 7), then you need to know this: it is the Vodacom Durban July!

This event is regarded as the ultimate race by horse fanatics and punters.

Speaking to Jean Duncan from our local Tote, she highlighted the fact that a lot of interest is certainly shown in this year’s race. Punters have come in as of Monday (July 2) to place their bets.

The main race, which is race no. 7, will be broadcast on television 4.20pm.

“At the moment, the current favourites are 3, 4, 5, 11 and 15. African Night Sky (No. 4) has been the favourite leading into July. However, one needs to emphasise that each horse differs depending on the bets,” added Jean.

For Jean, over the last 24 years of being in the July handicap business, the day of the race is always chock-a-block with great excitement. “On race day, the Tote has a great atmosphere and vibe, with punters cheering for their horses while the race is on,” says Jean.

Bets start from R6.00 upwards and this year, a new bet has been introduced called the “3 mix”. If you’re uncertain how to bet, go down to your local Tote and they will be willing to help you!

Last year, the winning horse was Marinaresco, which was ridden by jockey Bernard Fay’d Herbe. This year, Marinaresco is not running the race. However, Bernard Fay’d Herbe will be riding Elusive Silva (horse no. 5).

Speaking to a local punter, Mr Moodley, he said his favourite is Made to Conquer (horse no. 15), which is trained by SJ Snaith. Mr Moodley has been “playing” the July for the last 10 years.

“Snaith has five horses that will be running in this year’s race, being horse number 4, 5, 7, 8 and 15. The jockey (J Lloyd) riding my favourite hasn’t won a July. He will be returning to South Africa to run this year’s July handicap,” said Moodley.

“For a jockey, the July handicap is the ultimate race and when their horse wins, it is a huge achievement, not forgetting the large cash money up for grabs,” added Moodley.

For most punters, the July handicap is a bonus, as they get paid for 6 places.
