Raw sewage is still flowing through the stream that people call the “Stink” spruit.
The stream flows through a heavily populated residential area from the bottom of Ruby Gailey Drive to Poort Road and then flows into the Klip River.
“This pollution is not only a very serious health hazard, but the unpleasant smell becomes unbearable to the residents in the area. Despite numerous complaints by DA councillors and the community over the past number of years, this serious health risk has not been resolved by uThukela,” stated DA councillor Sharon Buys.
uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza responded that: “The challenge pertaining to the sewer in respect of the spruit running past Christopher Park is related to the high density of trees, of which the roots have severely damaged the sewer reticulation system in the said area. Specialised equipment and machinery has to be used in order to deal with the problem.

“This situation is compromised by the huge amount of foreign objects and matter that is dumped into the sewer system. This act of abuse and illegal dumping into the sewer system is man-made.
“As it was stated in the past and we still reiterate that the sewer system within the district can be easily managed and controlled if the sewer system is used only for its intended purpose.
“This gross abuse of the sewer system not only at Christopher Park but also in the CBD and other areas is self-inflicted.
“We once again make a humble appeal to the public not to abuse the system and if respect is given in this regard, we would not have the continuous challenges surrounding blocked and overflowing sewage.”
