Educating Ladysmith men about living a healthy lifestyle

The focus was on getting men to become aware of problems they may have and also increase their courage to do something about it

uThukela District Municipality, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Men’s Sector, recently hosted a Men’s Health and Wellness campaign at Enyokeni sports ground in Ezakheni.

The purpose of the event was to heighten awareness of health problems, and encourage early detection and treatment of diseases among men. The focus was on getting men to become aware of problems they may have and also increase their courage to do something about it.

uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko, Deputy Mayor NW Sibiya, Chief Whip S Dlungwane, Alfred Duma Mayor Vincent Madlala and Mr M Mazibuko from Men’s Sector, as well as different government departments, were part of the dialogues with men in Ezakheni.

The Office of the Mayor identified the ‘lifestyle we’re living’ as an issue and for this very reason, they approached the Department of Sport & Recreation to host a soccer tournament to encourage a culture of sport and exercise.

In his welcome remarks, Mayor Mazibuko thanked the community who came to be a part of the ‘engagement’ and reminded men that they are the providers so they need to take care of their families, as real men don’t abuse women. He further encouraged men to remember their role as protectors in their households and also called all South Africans to be active participants in the fight to eradicate violence against women and children.

“This campaign still remains relevant in our country because lack of understanding of children’s and women’s rights has proven to be a challenge. This is a time to bring about awareness of health issues that affect men disproportionately and focus on getting men to become aware of problems they may have or could encounter, and gain the courage to do something about it,” the mayor said.

Each year, Men’s Health and Wellness becomes bigger and more well-known, so if you’re a man who wants to do more, or a woman who wants to inform a man you love about it, then get involved in spreading the word.

The more well-known it becomes, the more men will feel like it’s fine to talk about their health issues and not just push them to the side and ignore their health problems.
